  • Sleep: The Final Frontier -- waking up to the health benefits of melatonin - David Kossor

For over 50 years, melatonin has become known as the “sleep hormone” because it is produced by the pineal gland in the brain during the evening hours and it promotes and maintains sleep. More recent studies have determined that melatonin also is produced by specialized cells throughout the gut, and this production is stimulated around-the-clock by the presence of food. Unlike the melatonin from the pineal gland that is released into the blood and circulates through the body, melatonin in the gut stays in the gut, where it exerts anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and metallochaperone functions. Exposure to environmental toxicants depletes the pool of melatonin in the gut, and while healthy people are able to make more melatonin to restore the pool, many patients with autism...

Melatonin is a natural hormone produced mainly by the pineal gland in the brain . recently it has been found in the bone marrow, where it appears to be linked with white cell formation. The pineal has a link between the nervous system and the ‘Limbic System’ of the brain. It is linked to perception and is activated by energetic and magnetic frequencies. it is linked to circadian rhythms and to seasonal sleeping and breeding habits. Recent research carried in Cancer Watch suggested that circadian rhythms might even control the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs and the time of day they should be taken.Melatonin Production is light sensitive and regulatory ‘sensors’ have been found in the retina. It is produced about 90 minutes after falling asleep and pushes you into a deeper sleep. One ...

When I speak of “safety,” I am primarily referring to the potential down-regulation or inhibition of the body’s own melatonin production with long-term melatonin supplementation. Some experts report that when this happens, the body will stop both producing AND responding to its own melatonin. If this happens, the “hormone of darkness,” and perhaps the most important hormone in the body, may become non-responsive. On the other side of the equation, there is science suggesting that these long-term side effects of melatonin do not exist. In one meta-analysis of more than 16,000 subjects from 19 studies, melatonin was not shown to be less effective with continued use. When I come across science on both sides of the aisle that found opposite results, I suggest to be more safe than sorry. That said, OTC melatonin supplementation is very safe for short-term circadian sleep resetting and for jet-lag. However, dosage is very important. So why is it not many people know about this amazing supplement well i think the answer lies from its promotion in health food magazines and supplement shops. You can find out more information at our website at http://www.gethealthnaturally.com It's not a supplement you see on shop shelves in fact in the UK the supplement was banned and wasn't available in your local health food store, although in the states its readily available for you to buy in stores. Why is it now people are starting to wake up to melatonin and the amazing heath benefits to be gained from using this wonderful supplement. Read the rest of this article to see why are using it now and the health fighting properties of melatonin. 1: Antioxidant DefenseCombat Free Radical Damage While You Sleep Melatonin has been found to possess 200% more antioxidant power than vitamin E.31 Melatonin has been found to be superior to glutathione as well as vitamins C and E in reducing oxidative damage.6As such a potent antioxidant, melatonin plays a powerful role in fighting free-radical-related diseases—from cardiovascular disease to cancer and practically everything in between. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a derivative of the amino acid tryptophan and widely distributed in food sources, such as milk, almonds, bananas, beets, cucumbers, mustard, and tomatoes.21-23 2: Melatonin Fights Back Against Heart Disease Since cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, melatonin's ability to protect against heart damage is especially noteworthy.38 In the past decade, melatonin has received considerable attention investigating its potential as a cardioprotective nutrient. Animal studies have provided ample evidence supporting melatonin's antioxidant protection against heart muscle injury,39,40reducing the damage done by a heart attack,41,42 and improving the strength of the heart's pumping action following a heart attack.43-46 3: It Help To Fight Cancer Cells Emerging research suggests that melatonin has anticarcinogenic properties—that is, it has the ability to prevent cancer from occurring, or to induce the cancer cell death if it does occur. This has been attributed to melatonin's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and hormone-modulating properties.49,50. Melatonin's ability to interfere with cancer cell multiplication and growth ("proliferation"), as well as inducing cancer cell death ("apoptosis"), has been documented in cancer patients.51, 52 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MELATONIN'S MULTIPLE BENEFITS TO YOUR HEALTH In humans, melatonin is primarily synthesized by the pineal gland, but it is also produced in the gastrointestinal tract and retina.24,25 Melatonin and its metabolites are potent antioxidants with anti-inflammatory, hypotensive, cell communication enhancing, cancer fighting, brown fat-activating, and blood-lipid-lowering effects, thereby protecting tissues from a variety of insults.5-9 Melatonin has been shown to support circadian rhythm, hormone balance, reproductive health, cognition, mood, blood sugar regulation, and bone metabolism, while improving overall antioxidant status and lowering blood pressure.1,10-17 Melatonin may assist in preventing diabetic complications, and improving treatment outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer.1,2,7,9,10 Read more You can watch the video on our site at http://www.gethealthnaturally.com/melatonin-attacks-the-aging-of-your-body.html/ For more of our videos go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUN6yes33sw&feature=plcp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8m3uS_sk8I&feature=plcp We hope you enjoyed this video, if you did please Share and Like the video. Exposure to environmental toxicants depletes the pool of melatonin in the gut, and while healthy people are able to make more melatonin to restore the pool, many patients with autism have enzyme deficiencies that allow the melatonin deficit to persist. Thus, in addition to insomnia, many of the signs and symptoms of autism may be due, in part, to the loss of melatonin in the gut. For these patients, it may be possible to correct the melatonin deficiency using Melascend®, a medical food that specifically restores the natural pool of melatonin in the gut in a way that no other product can.

One function of melatonin is to regulate excess oestrogen levels. Irregular sleeping habits lower melatonin production and are also associated with higher breast cancer levels. The discovery of melatonin in the bone marrow and its reduction by EMFs has spawned debate about its role in prevention of leukaemia and especially child leukaemia. melatonin supplementation has important oncostatic effects. both in cancer prevention and also during chemotherapy, where it cuts down the side effects. Melatonin levels decline with age and melatonin supplements have been shown to have anti-aging benefits.Supplementation is now used by night shift workers, nurses, long-haul flyers and a number of top oncology and anti-aging professors on both sides of the Atlantic. Supplements of 3 to 6 milligrams of melatonin are commonly taken about 30 minutes before going to bed. Levels above 10 milligrams have been thought to cause vivid dreams and hallucination. ****If you’re considering supplementing with Melatonin, I suggest that you do your own research and seek medical advice. Especially if you’re taking any type of medication, if you have a medical condition, if you’re pregnant, if you have an auto immune disorder, etc. Do NOT take if you are pregnant!! I've been taking Melatonin on and off for over 5 yrs. On nights when I'm naturally tired from a long day OR if I've consumed alcohol, I will skip the oral melatonin and only apply a half pump of the topical melatonin. Product Links: Spring Valley Melatonin (5mg): http://amzn.to/2lk9Z5z Life Flo – Melatonin (3mg with each pump): http://amzn.to/2jqCNbn INTERESTING ARTICLES ABOUT MELATONIN: http://encognitive.com/node/12290 https://www.verywell.com/melatonin-your-thyroid-and-hormones-3232753 https://www.holtorfmed.com/melatonin-sleep-thyroid-hormones/ http://www.laddmcnamara.net/what-you-should-know-about-taking-your-thyroid-medication/ What is Melatonin? 1. Melatonin is a hormone produced in the brain that helps regulate your sleep and wake cycle. Melatonin has been used in alternative medicine as a natural sleep aid for people who have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. 2. Melatonin is produced during the dark hours and stops upon optic exposure to daylight. So darkness encourages or signals the release of Melatonin and Light actually inhibits the release. Why do I take Melatonin? 1. Melatonin is a hormone that plays a critical role in your health and well being. 2. Melatonin is touted for, or referred to as the body's most Efficient Free-Radical Scavenger with an impressive ability to control oxidative stress because of its powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune properties. 3. Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify the harmful effects of free radicals through neutralization by antioxidants. 4. So Antioxidants are necessary to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals by stopping them in their tracks or neutralizing and repairing cells. 5. Free radicals are cells that were once healthy, but that are no longer healthy because they've been damaged by a variety of factors. Some of which are… exposure to stress, cigarette smoke, alcohol, polution, pesticides in foods, radiation from the sun, viruses, germs or fungi etc.have 6. So what happens is that atoms within the cell, lose an electron. It then tries to steal an electron from a neighboring atom to complete itself and that’s how the domino effect begins, eventually damaging the cell. And that domino effect is what is responsible for the fine lines and the wrinkles and the discoloration….basically every undesirable aspect of aging skin. 7. So that’s where Melatonin comes in as a powerful antioxidant. Because antioxidants are what stops that domino effect from just wreaking havoc on our bodies and our skin. 8. Melatonin has powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune properties…and it protects both lipids and proteins against damage, and can scavenge some of the most dangerous free radicals in the body….including the free radicals that lead to cancer. 9. The body uses antioxidants to soak up free radicals like sponges. So the more antioxidants your body has available to it, the less damage will be caused by free radicals. So more Anti-Oxidants = Less Free Radical Damage So Why do I take Oral and Topical Melatonin? 1. Unfortunately, levels of naturally produced melatonin decline as we get older, leaving us with limited antioxidant protection against conditions associated with oxidative stress and free radical damage 2. Apparently because of that drop in melatonin levels, very little melatonin ever actually makes it to the skin’s surface, so applying it topically allows skin cells to rejuvenate and restore themselves from the wear and tear of the day through the power of antioxidants. 3. German scientists recently discovered melatonin receptors in the skin.1 And that the skin also produces melatonin. It’s a separate supply from the brain. 4. melatonin stimulates the growth of fibroblasts, which are the cells that produce collagen and elastin. Your skin’s entire structural support depends on collagen and elastin. They make your skin smooth and wrinkle-free….but they’re very sensitive to UV rays from the sun. 5. Turns out Topical Melatonin also offers natural UV protection of those fibroblasts So basically, there’s more to Melatonin than just being a natural sleep aid. If you’re having a difficult time, falling asleep and staying asleep, it could be that your body is not producing enough Melatonin, but as always....seek medical advice first!

We spend roughly a third of our lives sleeping, but catching enough Zs isn’t always easy. Mayo Clinic Sleep Medicine Specialist Dr. Timothy Morgenthaler says adults should be shooting for seven to nine hours of shut-eye each night. Less than that, and your risk of cardiovascular problems, obesity, and even cancer can dramatically increase. But millions of Americans have trouble falling or staying asleep, so many turn to over-the-counter sleep aids. One of the most popular is melatonin. In this Mayo Clinic Minute, Dr. Morgenthaler explains what melatonin actually does for the body, and when it's appropriate to use to improve sleep. Ian Roth reports.
