For over 50 years, melatonin has become known as the “sleep hormone” because it is produced by the pineal gland in the brain during the evening hours and it promotes and maintains sleep. More recent studies have determined that melatonin also is produced by specialized cells throughout the gut, and this production is stimulated around-the-clock by the presence of food. Unlike the melatonin from the pineal gland that is released into the blood and circulates through the body, melatonin in the gut stays in the gut, where it exerts anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and metallochaperone functions. Exposure to environmental toxicants depletes the pool of melatonin in the gut, and while healthy people are able to make more melatonin to restore the pool, many patients with autism...

A study conducted a team of researchers of Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in Sao Paolo, Brazil, found that taking 3 mg of melatonin 30 minutes before your bedtime can help sooth your migraines. When I speak of “safety,” I am primarily referring to the potential down-regulation or inhibition of the body’s own melatonin production with long-term melatonin supplementation. Some experts report that when this happens, the body will stop both producing AND responding to its own melatonin. If this happens, the “hormone of darkness,” and perhaps the most important hormone in the body, may become non-responsive. On the other side of the equation, there is science suggesting that these long-term side effects of melatonin do not exist. In one meta-analysis of more than 16,000 subjects from 19 studies, melatonin was not shown to be less effective with continued use. When I come across science on both sides of the aisle that found opposite results, I suggest to be more safe than sorry. That said, OTC melatonin supplementation is very safe for short-term circadian sleep resetting and for jet-lag. However, dosage is very important. Rene Descartes called it “the principle seat of the soul.” For years, researchers thought the pineal gland was an evolutionary remnant with no real purpose. In the 1970s, they discovered that it was the single manufacturer of a special hormone, called melatonin. Pigeon-holed as “the sleep hormone,” melatonin has become a famous OTC supplement for jet-lag and sleep in an attempt to help the more than 60 million Americans with sleep concerns. Yes, melatonin is the sleep hormone – but new research has only begun to understand the powerful role this 3 billion-year-old molecule has on our health and longevity. Melatonin levels are easy to measure in the urine. Within about 60 minutes, the circulating melatonin in the blood finds its way to the liver, where it is broken down into its primary metabolite, 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (MT6s). Fortunately, dried urine preserves melatonin and cortisol on urine strips. Home urine testing for cortisol and melatonin are available here http://store.lifespa.com/sleep_balance_profile.html

More Than A Good Night Sleep: 3 Ways Melatonin Fights Aging Often referred to as "the sleep hormone" most people acknowledge melatonin for its positive effect on restful sleep and regulating our internal body clock. to find more information on our site go here http://www.gethealthnaturally.com Researchers have recently discovered it promotes much more than a good night sleep. Melatonin has demonstrated beneficial effects on diabetes, heart disease, bone health and obesity. Adding to the excitement, emerging science now suggests that melatonin possesses unique properties to help protect you against the diseases and decline associated with ageing. Unfortunately, as we age, most hormone production levels change. Although this is also true of melatonin, over the counter supplementation has proven to increase its production and availability, helping you delay... and even avoid... age related diseases. Your invited to read on, in the text below this video, to learn for yourself how melatonin works and discover the valuable role scientists now say it plays: 1. Fighting free-radicals to prevent cancer from occurring, or even induce the death of existing cancer cells 2. Help delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease and protect cells damage and decay associated with cognitive impairment 3. Help Prevent Osteoporosis by aiding in bone repair and increased bone mineral density. People use melatonin to adjust the body's internal clock. It is used for jet lag, for adjusting sleep-wake cycles in people whose daily work schedule changes (shift-work disorder), and for helping blind people establish a day and night cycle.

Melatonin is also used for the inability to fall asleep (insomnia); delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS); insomnia associated with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); insomnia due to certain high blood pressure medications called beta-blockers; and sleep problems in children with developmental disorders including autism, cerebral palsy, and mental retardation. It is also used as a sleep aid after discontinuing the use of benzodiazepine drugs and to reduce the side effects of stopping smoking.

Some people use melatonin for Alzheimer's disease, ringing in the ears, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia, migraine and other headaches, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bone loss (osteoporosis), a movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia (TD), epilepsy, as an anti-aging agent, for menopause, and for birth control.

Other uses include breast cancer, brain cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, head cancer, neck cancer, and gastrointestinal cancer. Melatonin is also used for some of the side effects of cancer treatment (chemotherapy) including weight loss, nerve pain, weakness, and a lowered number of clot-forming cells (thrombocytopenia).

It is also used to calm people before they are given anesthesia for surgery.

The forms of melatonin that can be absorbed through the cheek or under the tongue are used for insomnia, shift-work disorder, and to calm people before receiving anesthesia for surgery.

Sometimes people apply melatonin to the skin to protect against sunburn. How effective is it? Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rates effectiveness based on scientific evidence according to the following scale: Effective, Likely Effective, Possibly Effective, Possibly Ineffective, Likely Ineffective, Ineffective, and Insufficient Evidence to Rate.

The effectiveness ratings for MELATONIN are as follows: To read more of this article and the benefits of melatonin click on the link below http://www.gethealthnaturally.com/melatonin-attacks-the-aging-of-your-body.html/ I hope you have found the information in this article of good use, if so please Like and Share this video. What's the best dosage? Many patients find melatonin helpful for falling asleep. I do not find melatonin helpful for patients who use it to stay asleep or who wake up multiple times during the night. Many melatonin supplements on the market are sold in 1-3mg pills. However some people experience a side effect of fatigue or grogginess in the morning after taking too high a dosage of melatonin. It is more natural to take a smaller dose of melatonin such as 0.5mg and to take it it anywhere from sunset to 2-3 hours before bed. This gives the melatonin time to work into the natural circadian rhythm to get the body ready to calm down for bed. It is more supportive of the natural clock rather than giving a large dose right before bed. After using melatonin to train your body clock as well as developing more consistent sleep cycles, it's best to allow the body to go on it's natural cycle rather than taking melatonin for sleep indefinitely. Exposure to environmental toxicants depletes the pool of melatonin in the gut, and while healthy people are able to make more melatonin to restore the pool, many patients with autism have enzyme deficiencies that allow the melatonin deficit to persist. Thus, in addition to insomnia, many of the signs and symptoms of autism may be due, in part, to the loss of melatonin in the gut. For these patients, it may be possible to correct the melatonin deficiency using Melascend®, a medical food that specifically restores the natural pool of melatonin in the gut in a way that no other product can.
