Melatonin, chemically N-acetyl-5-methoxy tryptamine, is a substance found in animals, plants, fungi and bacteria. In animals it is a hormone that anticipates the daily onset of darkness; however in other organisms it may have different functions. Likewise, the synthesis of melatonin in animals differs from that in other organisms.
In animals, melatonin is involved in the entrainment (synchronization) of the circadian rhythms of physiological functions including sleep timing, blood pressure regulation, seasonal reproduction and many others. Many of melatonin's biological effects in animals are produced through activation of melatonin receptors, while others are due to its role as a pervasive and powerful antioxidant, with a particular role in the protection of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA.
The hormone can be used as a sleep aid and in the treatment of some sleep disorders. It can be taken orally in liquid form as well as capsules or tablets in immediate- or prolonged-release form. It is also available in a form to be used sublingually, and as transdermal patches. Melatonin is sold over-the-counter in the U.S. and Canada. In other countries it may require a prescription or it may be unavailable.
Health is the level of functional or metabolic efficiency of a living organism. In humans it is the ability of individuals or communities to adapt and self-manage when facing physical, mental or social challenges. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined health in its broader sense in its 1948 constitution as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." This definition has been subject to controversy, in particular as lacking operational value and because of the problem created by use of the word "complete" Other definitions have been proposed, among which a recent definition that correlates health and personal satisfaction. Classification systems such as the WHO Family of International Classifications, including the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), are commonly used to define and measure the components of health. Health is that balanced condition of the living organism in which the integral, harmonious performance of the vital functions tends to the preservation of the organism and the normal development of the individual.

Sleep is a naturally recurring state of mind characterized by altered consciousness, relatively inhibited sensory activity, inhibition of nearly all voluntary muscles, and reduced interactions with surroundings. It is distinguished from wakefulness by a decreased ability to react to stimuli, but is more easily reversed than the state of hibernation or of being comatose. Mammalian sleep occurs in repeating periods, in which the body alternates between two highly distinct modes known as non-REM and REM sleep. REM stands for "rapid eye movement" but involves many other aspects including virtual paralysis of the body.
During sleep, most systems in an animal are in an anabolic state, building up the immune, nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems. Sleep in non-human animals is observed in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, and, in some form, in insects and even in simpler animals such as nematodes. The internal circadian clock promotes sleep daily at night in diurnal species (such as humans) and in the day in nocturnal organisms (such as rodents). However, sleep patterns vary widely among animals and among different individual humans. Industrialization and artificial light have substantially altered human sleep habits in the last 100 years.

This is my experience with melatonin, he sleeping agent used to help you sleep throughout the night.
For over 50 years, melatonin has become known as the “sleep hormone” because it is produced by the pineal gland in the brain during the evening hours and it promotes and maintains sleep. More recent studies have determined that melatonin also is produced by specialized cells throughout the gut, and this production is stimulated around-the-clock by the presence of food. Unlike the melatonin from the pineal gland that is released into the blood and circulates through the body, melatonin in the gut stays in the gut, where it exerts anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and metallochaperone functions. Exposure to environmental toxicants depletes the pool of melatonin in the gut, and while healthy people are able to make more melatonin to restore the pool, many patients with autism...

There are some concerns which are responsible for increasing popularity of melatonin and most of these concerns are due to lack of information about long-term side effects of melatonin as a sleeping supplement. Usually, people use melatonin to regulate their internal clock such as people whose work routines change (work-shift disorder) use melatonin to adjust their internal system as well as it is used by blind people to establish their day and night cycle. Quicksilver Scientific brings you an advanced delivery form of the body’s primary sleep-modulating hormone, melatonin. Melatonin is principally produced by the pineal gland and regulates the body’s circadian rhythm. Under settings such as stress or travel, the body’s sleep cycle can become dysregulated, and balance can be restored by supplementing with melatonin. The normal melatonin cycle can diminish with age and be disrupted by exposure to electromagnetic pollution, and by blue light at night. Supplemental melatonin assists in restoring normal, healthy sleep patterns. Melatonin also acts as a neuroprotective antioxidant, and as such may also have a positive impact on mood and cognition, particularly in conditions associated with neuroinflammation. The importance of melatonin in health...

When it comes to the most important lifestyle factors for optimal health, light exposure takes the cake. Sure, food and exercise are important. But did you know that being exposed to artificial light can change what your body does with the food you eat? Recent research has linked artificial light exposure to cancer, obesity, diabetes and heart disease. This is a crucial concept to understand because most of us are exposed to artificial light on a 24-hr basis. We sleep with our TVs on at night and stare at cell phones and computer screens all day while we are at work. This artificial light exposure tricks our body into thinking that it is daytime all of the time, causing hormonal imbalances and a cascade of adverse health conditions. The invention of the li...

Ray outlines the 24-hour circadian rhythm that affects all animals´ sleeping and feeding patterns, brain wave activity, hormone production and other biological activities vital to their health and well-being. Melatonin, a hormone produced predominantly at night in the pineal gland, plays an important role in regulating our body clock. Ray discusses the 2006 finding of the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies of Science that fluoride is likely to reduce melatonin production and have other effects on normal pineal function. He identifies the potential adverse health impacts of inhibiting or suppressing melatonin production by agents such as fluoride. Ray presents a personal perspective and is not speaking on behalf of The University of Sydney.
