  • Sleep: The Final Frontier -- waking up to the health benefits of melatonin - David Kossor

For over 50 years, melatonin has become known as the “sleep hormone” because it is produced by the pineal gland in the brain during the evening hours and it promotes and maintains sleep. More recent studies have determined that melatonin also is produced by specialized cells throughout the gut, and this production is stimulated around-the-clock by the presence of food. Unlike the melatonin from the pineal gland that is released into the blood and circulates through the body, melatonin in the gut stays in the gut, where it exerts anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and metallochaperone functions. Exposure to environmental toxicants depletes the pool of melatonin in the gut, and while healthy people are able to make more melatonin to restore the pool, many patients with autism...

  • The Pineal Gland And Melatonin

Melatonin is a natural hormone produced mainly by the pineal gland in the brain . recently it has been found in the bone marrow, where it appears to be linked with white cell formation. The pineal has a link between the nervous system and the ‘Limbic System’ of the brain. It is linked to perception and is activated by energetic and magnetic frequencies. it is linked to circadian rhythms and to seasonal sleeping and breeding habits. Recent research carried in Cancer Watch suggested that circadian rhythms might even control the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs and the time of day they should be taken.Melatonin Production is light sensitive and regulatory ‘sensors’ have been found in the retina. It is produced about 90 minutes after falling asleep and pushes you into a deeper sleep. One ...

What's the best dosage? Many patients find melatonin helpful for falling asleep. I do not find melatonin helpful for patients who use it to stay asleep or who wake up multiple times during the night. Many melatonin supplements on the market are sold in 1-3mg pills. However some people experience a side effect of fatigue or grogginess in the morning after taking too high a dosage of melatonin. It is more natural to take a smaller dose of melatonin such as 0.5mg and to take it it anywhere from sunset to 2-3 hours before bed. When I speak of “safety,” I am primarily referring to the potential down-regulation or inhibition of the body’s own melatonin production with long-term melatonin supplementation. Some experts report that when this happens, the body will stop both producing AND responding to its own melatonin. If this happens, the “hormone of darkness,” and perhaps the most important hormone in the body, may become non-responsive. On the other side of the equation, there is science suggesting that these long-term side effects of melatonin do not exist. In one meta-analysis of more than 16,000 subjects from 19 studies, melatonin was not shown to be less effective with continued use. When I come across science on both sides of the aisle that found opposite results, I suggest to be more safe than sorry. That said, OTC melatonin supplementation is very safe for short-term circadian sleep resetting and for jet-lag. However, dosage is very important. The night peak of melatonin initiates a sequence of positive effects with a cascade of events which maintain the body systems synchronized with the physiological cyclicity of all hormones and cells. Circadian night melatonin produces a resynchronization of the entire hormonal system and improves metabolic and hormonal functions, including blood pressure, cholesterol levels, thyroid, gonad and adrenal functions. Melatonin will counteract the negative side-effects of corticosteroids and of stressful agents, thus protecting the immune system. Melatonin does not induce sleep but facilitates its onset and produces a sleep pattern which is typical of children. Thus it greatly improves the quality of sleep and its restoring physical and psychological effects, with a clear improvement of morning mood and body muscle strength.. Melatonin is found in nature including all cells, plants, animals, tissues and all living organisms. Its night "signal" is essential for the maintenance of immunity and the "surveillance" against the onset of tumors. Therefore melatonin is a fundamental element for prevention of age-related diseases, including cancer, autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases. Melatonin cannot be considered a classical "hormone" because it does not possess any of the qualities of the classical hormones such as growth hormone, cortisone, estrogens, thyroid hormones etc. Rather it modulates and controls the synthesis and secretion of all hormones within a circadian and seasonal periodicity. It is this correction of the circadian clock that enables the restoration and correction of the derangements to enable maintenance of original juvenile conditions. Melatonin Zn-Se is suitable to resynchronize all hormonal functions and Melatonin Zn-Se contains synergistic elements to obtain more rapid effects and to compensate the loss of fundamental minerals, due to bad diet or to aging. Zinc Many studies have observed that zinc can correct aging-dependent immuno-depression and several other hormonal and metabolic alterations typical of aging. Zinc is an essential component of more than 200 enzymes and one of the most important trace elements in the body. Studies of Dr. Pierpaoli and co-workers have shown that melatonin alone produces an increase of zinc levels in the blood of old animals. This important observation of the powerful antiaging and immuno-enhancing activity of the combination of zinc and melatonin has resulted into the development of Melatonin Zn-Se. Selenium Selenium is a fundamental trace element of the body and possesses powerful anti-cancer effects. Modern agriculture and alimentary habits have dramatically decreased the quantity of selenium from the diet. Selenium is essential for the enzymatic reaction responsible for the synthesis of glutathione, a powerful physiological molecule which constantly protects the body from oxidative damage. A lack of selenium will thus result in a loss of the detoxification capacity of the body, immunodepression and onset of degenerative diseases and cancer. This is the reason why Melatonin Zn-Se combines these 3 fundamental antiaging molecules of melatonin, zinc and selenium. Whilst melatonin plays the master role for reactivation and restoration of the natural night peak to juvenile levels, (thus resulting into the normalization of all measurable immunological and endocrine functions), the positive age-postponing, metabolic and immunological effects of Melatonin Zn-Se becomes progressively more visible and remarkable. In time, the "program of aging" can be slowed with regular nocturnal use of Melatonin Zn-Se." --- See also The Health Revolution playlist - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvaxr0OSBw2AL19G1rRsADNDBXQaiCeEE UK Column website - http://www.ukcolumn.org/ Youtube channel - http://www.youtube.com/ukcolumn Clive de Carle's website - http://www.ancientpurity.com/ Youtube channels - http://www.youtube.com/clivedecarle http://www.youtube.com/AncientPurityHealth

Exposure to environmental toxicants depletes the pool of melatonin in the gut, and while healthy people are able to make more melatonin to restore the pool, many patients with autism have enzyme deficiencies that allow the melatonin deficit to persist. Thus, in addition to insomnia, many of the signs and symptoms of autism may be due, in part, to the loss of melatonin in the gut. For these patients, it may be possible to correct the melatonin deficiency using Melascend®, a medical food that specifically restores the natural pool of melatonin in the gut in a way that no other product can.

One function of melatonin is to regulate excess oestrogen levels. Irregular sleeping habits lower melatonin production and are also associated with higher breast cancer levels. The discovery of melatonin in the bone marrow and its reduction by EMFs has spawned debate about its role in prevention of leukaemia and especially child leukaemia. melatonin supplementation has important oncostatic effects. both in cancer prevention and also during chemotherapy, where it cuts down the side effects. Melatonin levels decline with age and melatonin supplements have been shown to have anti-aging benefits.Supplementation is now used by night shift workers, nurses, long-haul flyers and a number of top oncology and anti-aging professors on both sides of the Atlantic. Supplements of 3 to 6 milligrams of melatonin are commonly taken about 30 minutes before going to bed. Levels above 10 milligrams have been thought to cause vivid dreams and hallucination. Rene Descartes called it “the principle seat of the soul.” For years, researchers thought the pineal gland was an evolutionary remnant with no real purpose. In the 1970s, they discovered that it was the single manufacturer of a special hormone, called melatonin. Pigeon-holed as “the sleep hormone,” melatonin has become a famous OTC supplement for jet-lag and sleep in an attempt to help the more than 60 million Americans with sleep concerns. Yes, melatonin is the sleep hormone – but new research has only begun to understand the powerful role this 3 billion-year-old molecule has on our health and longevity. Melatonin levels are easy to measure in the urine. Within about 60 minutes, the circulating melatonin in the blood finds its way to the liver, where it is broken down into its primary metabolite, 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (MT6s). Fortunately, dried urine preserves melatonin and cortisol on urine strips. Home urine testing for cortisol and melatonin are available here http://store.lifespa.com/sleep_balance_profile.html

http://www.modernintegrativemedicine.com Dr. Emily Chan ND Modern Integrative Medicine 3565 Del Rey St #207 San Diego, CA 92109 (617)-299-6151 What's the best way to take Melatonin? What's the best dosage? Many patients find melatonin helpful for falling asleep. I do not find melatonin helpful for patients who use it to stay asleep or who wake up multiple times during the night. Many melatonin supplements on the market are sold in 1-3mg pills. However some people experience a side effect of fatigue or grogginess in the morning after taking too high a dosage of melatonin. It is more natural to take a smaller dose of melatonin such as 0.5mg and to take it it anywhere from sunset to 2-3 hours before bed. This gives the melatonin time to work into the natural circadian rhythm to get the body ready to calm down for bed. It is more supportive of the natural clock rather than giving a large dose right before bed. After using melatonin to train your body clock as well as developing more consistent sleep cycles, it's best to allow the body to go on it's natural cycle rather than taking melatonin for sleep indefinitely. The pineal gland produces melatonin, which keeps these rhythms in check. Disruption of the circadian rhythms and decreases in melatonin can occur from light exposure at night, shift work, long hours, and/or aging, and has been associated with various serious health concerns, including increased risk of cancers, poor cognition, bone loss, sleep and weight issues, heart problems and more. Join us in this podcast to learn about simple life hacks to minimize circadian disruption and boost the body's natural production of melatonin.
